It's not every day that you hear about a high-profile charity facing bureaucratic troubles. However, the Archewell Foundation, created by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, is now in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Launched with great fanfare in 2020, Archewell aimed to continue the couple’s philanthropic efforts. Yet, recently, their ambitious project hit a significant snag.
The Delinquency Notice
California’s attorney general, Rob Bonta, recently sent a stern letter to Archewell. The authorities labeled the charity 'delinquent' for failing to submit required annual reports and renewal fees.
According to the letter, “An organization that is listed as delinquent is not in good standing and is prohibited from engaging in conduct for which registration is required, including soliciting or disbursing charitable funds.”
The situation escalated quickly, with the potential for penalties and suspension of their registration. However, Archewell claimed the lateness stemmed from a missing check. The foundation insisted they filed on time but weren’t notified about the missing payment until the delinquency notice arrived.
The Source of Confusion
Initially, an Archewell Foundation source told Page Six they had “filed for an extension.”
However, it was later revealed that they had filed the paperwork on time. A source told People magazine, “A check sent with the filing was never received.”
The missing payment caught them by surprise, and the notice came as a shock. Despite this hiccup, the foundation acted swiftly. They sent a new check, hoping to resolve the issue within seven business days.
Archewell's Mission and Impact
Archewell, inspired by their son Archie, is more than just a name. It represents a "source of action" that reflects the couple's vision to make a meaningful impact. Since its inception, the foundation has partnered with several organizations.
Among these are chef José Andrés’s World Central Kitchen and the Halo Trust, a land-mine-clearing charity previously supported by Princess Diana. The foundation has also worked with the GEANCO Foundation, which conducts surgical missions in Nigeria.
Notably, Archewell provided millions of COVID-19 vaccines and served over 50,000 meals. Their efforts also led to the construction of a playground in Uvalde, Texas. This was in addition to the creation of Harvest Home’s baby boutique in L.A., providing donated supplies for mothers.
Since its launch, the Archewell Foundation's finances have seen ups and downs. In 2021, the charity received $13 million in contributions, giving out $3 million in grants. However, 2022 was less favorable, with contributions dropping to just over $2 million.
Their expenses exceeded revenue by $674,000 that year. James Holt, the foundation’s executive director, saw his salary jump from less than $60,000 in 2021 to $227,405 in 2022, including a $20,000 bonus.
Future Ventures and Speculations
Beyond their charity work, Meghan and Harry have embarked on several for-profit ventures. Archewell Productions and Archewell Audio have produced shows like their Netflix docuseries "Harry & Meghan" and various podcasts.
Recently, Meghan teased a new lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard. However, it hasn’t officially launched yet, with only close friends receiving jam samples and sharing photos on social media.
Despite the recent hiccup, Meghan and Harry remain committed to their philanthropic journey. The Archewell Foundation is expected to bounce back once the missing check issue is resolved. Their ambitious vision for making a global impact continues, with their supporters eagerly waiting for their next move.
